Your Guide to the Perfect Engagement Ring

Your Guide to the Perfect Engagement Ring

When it comes to an engagement ring, it’s important to find or make something that catches your eye. In our experience, it’s all about style! The shape and cut are much more important than even the size of the diamond. If you’re completely lost, we are here to help you figure it out.

Start with Style

There are a million aspects to the ring’s design, and this can be quite overwhelming. If you’re not sure what to do, begin with a classic solitaire. Is it too simple, or do you like the timeless look? From here, you can think about the gem, cut, and setting.

Choose a Gemstone

We always love the classic sparkling diamond look, but some brides prefer a colorful gem in the center. We recommend rubies and sapphires because they are almost as hard as diamonds and are safe to wear everyday. These natural gemstones come in many hues! Black or yellow diamonds are always fun, and sapphires can be blue, yellow, or even pink!

Think About Cut and Shape

We find the cut is one of the most important parts of the design, and the quality of the cut can completely change the look of your gemstone. At the Diamond Center, we handpick the brightest diamonds in Antwerp and carry the world's most perfectly cut diamonds from Hearts on Fire.

Shape is the next step! If you’d like a more elongated look, try pear, marquise, oval, or even emerald cut gems. If you want to stick with more conventional symmetry, a round, radiant, or cushion cut may be right for you. The best way to find out is to come in and see it on your hand.

Find a Setting that Speaks to You

White gold and platinum are cool and classic, while yellow and rose gold are warm and comforting. However, sometimes functionality is more important than aesthetics, so we may recommend more prongs or a bezel setting to keep your center gemstone safe if you expect to wear your engagement ring often.

One of the first things we ask when you come in is “what do you do?” Sometimes your job or hobby is an important factor in how we set your ring! For example, nurses typically like a gemstone flush on the hand in a bezel setting so they can wear it easily under their gloves. If someone has sensitive skin, we will always recommend platinum settings because the metal is hypoallergenic.

After you have considered the features you might need, think back to the plain solitaire. Should it have a bit more sparkle? Consider adding diamonds to the band.

Does it need diamonds around the side? Try one with a diamond halo or baguettes! Looking for something more unique? Check out vintage settings or maybe something asymmetrical! What design captures your attention?

MakE it Meaningful

It’s up to you to make it special, and we are here for you at every step of the way. We like to listen and ask questions before pulling out pieces for you to try. What details can you highlight to connect this moment to your love story?

Many people grew up looking at their mother’s wedding ring, or knowing about a ring in the family. Is there an heirloom you’d like to transform into an engagement ring? Incorporating a mother’s or grandmother’s diamond can be a way to bring together your histories while making it your own.

Think about choosing their favorite gem if she’s not into diamonds. The birthstone for the month you met, or the month you got together might be good options too. If you are looking for something totally different, think about creating a custom design. We can help at each stage of the process. We sketch out your thoughts and combine all the right elements to create a ring that’s as beautiful and unique as you. If you have the ring in your mind’s eye, we would love to bring your vision to life!

You've Got This!

Typically you know when you see the ring–it speaks to you! But sometimes you don’t know it’s the one until you try it. In essence, choose from the heart! If it’s not perfect, you can always come back and we’ll make sure to get it right :)
